Support Services

The Administrative Division has several sections within the division that includes Investigations, Communications (Dispatch), and the Records Division. This division is overseen by a Commander who is responsible for Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, the Red Light Camera System (Redflex), as well as Personnel & Training.

Investigations Division

The Newark Police Department’s Investigations Division is comprised of one sergeant, four detectives, one Community Service Officer assigned to the Property & Evidence room and one Police Services Aide. This division is tasked with investigating major crimes, including homicide, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, fraud (identity theft, internet scams, forgery, credit card theft, etc.), elder abuse, child abuse, arson, and missing person cases.
Each detective has received advanced training in their area of expertise and all investigators receive on-going cross training to enable them to provide a higher level of service to the community.

Communications (Dispatch)

The Newark Police Department employs 10 full-time Public Safety Dispatchers who are managed by a Communication Supervisor. The Dispatch Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our Public Safety Dispatchers handle a wide variety of calls for service including 9-1-1 calls within the City limits, fire and medical aid, as well as calls for Police services. They are responsible for tracking the Officer's whereabouts and monitoring their safety. Dispatchers are trained to assess and prioritize each call they receive.

Records Division

The Records Unit is currently staffed with two Public Safety Clerks, one Police Services Aide, and volunteers, as needed. The Division is supervised by a Senior Public Safety Clerk. The Newark Police Department Records Unit front counter is open to serve the public Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Records Unit provides a high standard of customer service to assist the public regarding:

  • Traffic Accident Reports
  • Crime Reports
  • Criminal Background Clearance Letters
  • Warrants
  • Miscellaneous Front Counter Inquiries
  • Towed Vehicle Releases (this service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week)


The City of Newark has removed the option to report a crime on-line. As a result, you may now contact the non emergency line at 510-578-4237 and speak to a staff memeber to report a crime.
